Despite originally thinking I might not remove the gas combi boiler for a year or two, I decided to bite the bullet and order a heat pump. This time I went for a 5kW Samsung Gen 6. My reasons for switching from a Mitsubishi Ecodan, which I had previously, were largely cost. However the Samsung did have some interesting communications options involving modbus which might be used to monitor it. Switching over from the combi to the heat pump would have to be done carefully so as not to leave myself without central heating. I decided to do as much plumbing as I could and wait for warmer weather before taking the plunge. I decided not to use anti-freeze in this system and so need to incorporate anti-frost valves outside and normally closed valves on the inside. In the event of losing power during a cold spell, the internal valves would close and the external valves open, dumping the water in between onto the ground and avoid the heat pump from being damaged.

The kitchen came with a gas hob and in order to achieve the aim of becoming "electricity only" it had to go. A nice new induction hob, which is much easier to keep clean was installed. I also managed to find the external stopcock hidden under and inch of concrete! Just in time for the Welsh Water to fit the new meter!
